Millions of 25 mcg/hr Fentanyl Pain Patches Recalled

Millions of fentanyl pain patches were recalled by Johnson & Johnson on February 11, 2008. The recall affects all lots of 25 mcg/hr (fentanyl transdermal system) CII patches sold by Pricara and all 25mcg/hr fentanyl patches sold by Sandoz Inc. in the United States. All 25 mcg/hr fentanyl pain patches manufactured by ALZA and sold in Canada are also being recalled. The recalled patches have expiration dates on or before December 2009.

The 25mcg/hr fentanyl transdermal system patches may have a cut near the drug reservoir within the patch. As a result, the fentanyl gel may release from the reservoir into the package and potentially expose patients and caregivers to direct contact with fentanyl gel. Exposure to fentanyl may lead to respiratory complications or ultimately death.
